"Comical" Halloween Costumes

"Mexican" costume from Party City
Although Halloween has since passed months ago. There is always a viral video around that time, that talks about Halloween's insensitive costumes. Of course the video, that I am talking about is "My Culture is Not a Costume". The video is created by a company named Teen Vogue, and they ask six women about Halloween costumes that were created to resemble another culture that were created for the sole purpose for fun and laughs. Which ironically was the complete opposite, as the video talks about how the costumes were very offensive towards the culture that it was based off of because Halloween costumes are created for the purpose of being funny or scary. As wearing a costume that resembles another culture could come off that you would imply that culture is funny or scary, which may not be the intention in the first place. My opinion on this situation is that I would not find it a problem for a person to wear costumes to create a similar appearance. However what I do find a problem is when people will purchase the costume and dress up as the culture, without any reason to do so, and overall wearing it because they would want to create a humorous effect. From my experience, I have not encountered many or any inappropriate costumes, nor have I ever worn one.

From my opinion, for this situation to end. I believe people or manufacturers should stop producing and selling these culturally insensitive costumes in the beginning. The fewer that these costumes are created or seen from shops, is a way we can get people from spreading the word of these costumes by seeing it. Although just like the video that was previously mentioned, people have already tried getting the word out on this situation. Even if this situation is not completely depleted, I believe that this strategy could effect or help out.
