For the Nike's 30th anniversary advertisement, the ad's campaign was lead by Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was a former quarterback for the NFL team, the San Francisco 49er's. During a game in 2016, he had knelt with one knee during the national anthem, in protest to the racial injustice. After the incident, Kaepernick had became a free agent and has not worked with the NFL since. Other players had followed suit by taking a knee as well. With Nike having Colin Kaepernick as the lead, there was an outrage on the internet of burning Nike products. Some believe that this had became the downfall of Nike with the internet's reaction boycotting Nike. Although far from wrong, this had ignited a response from the President Trump himself commenting, "What was Nike thinking". In my opinion, the reason it was controversial was it was a move made by a well known company. Nike knew that there was going to be backlash against the advertisement, but knew they would get support from others as well. The support could be noticeable in their sales after the movement, as it did not damage Nike's sales and it did quite the opposite. In my opinion, this advertisement would only damage them for a few months before they go back into buying Nike products. The advertisement from what I see, was created to spark a conversation about the political state of the country. As for the burning of Nike products, I never seen what good reason to destroy products that you've purchased. The #JustBurnIt doesn't affect me at all, as overall it seemed like an unneeded way to react to the situation. What amazes me as well, is the fact that the #JustBurnIt is a protest to a protest. Even after only a few months after the incident, there is still some talk about the advertisement till this day. There still is an ongoing conversation about everything from Nike to Colin Kaepernick. However in the end, Nike is still earning revenue from the whole situation and still manage to have a boost in their sales.
I agree completely, I believe that it was considered more controversial of an ad campaign because of the expansiveness of Nike. I am also amazed by the fact that people just burnt Nike products that they paid for, in essence they were just wasting their money, and that confuses me as well. In the end I also agree with the fact that Nike is still making a lot of revenue and boosting their sales, despite the controversy stemmed from Colin Kaepernick's involvement.
I agree with you. I believe that Nike knew what they were getting their selves into and expected the support they received. Colin Kaepernick got the community aware of what type of discrimination African American individuals go through. Although, I did not understand the significance of the protest, as they were burning quality products they paid for. Although this might have caught the attention of several individuals, I believe there were more effective ways to get the message across.
